A seaside tourist town has been given the green light to spruce up its signage.

The plans, lodged by Sheringham Town Council, propose placing new pedestrian signs across the resort as part of a new "wayfinding strategy".

This includes installing new and replacement directional fingerposts, as well as monolith tourist information boards with directions, maps and artworks at 28 sites.

The proposed locations include prime tourist spots such as the seafront, North Norfolk Railway and Sheringham Museum, as well as public amenities.

Planning permission for the signs has been approved by North Norfolk District Council.

Liz Withington, the authority's cabinet member for tourism, who represents Sheringham North, said: "The idea behind the scheme is that we have lots of assets in the town that tourists don't even know about.

"There is very little signage at the moment and it is very old.

"It's about making people able to find the amenities and attractions that they need to we get repeat visitors and people stay for longer, which supports our local economy.

"Secondly it's about making things more accessible, the signs will take people through routes that provide easier access."

The signs will also have indication of the time it takes to walk to the destinations, and provide clear routes to transport links.
