One of the few remaining independent tackle shops in North Norfolk has closed its doors.

Andy Ray had run Rays of Runton for two years after taking the tackle shop on in Cromer Road by West Runton.

Mr Ray said he could not compete with the internet for trade.

He said: "It is a dying trade now, so is bait digging.

"I can't compete with the internet, that is the culture now.

"It's declining more and more. I was one of the last ones in the area really, between King's Lynn and Norwich.

"Since I took the shop on I saw five others close nearby.

"I put everything I had into it, but there just was not enough trade."

When he took on the shop Mr Ray gave it its new name as a new 'mickey take' of Roy's of Wroxham.

Mr Ray's vision was to get more people into fishing and keep tackle shop culture alive.

He said: "I started up because I wanted to get more people, especially kids and younger people, into fishing.

"I had been coming in the shop for about 16 years before I took it on. It really is a culture.

"When people come back in and say that my son loved it or they have caught their personal best or something, it was just great.

"I was running the shop and bait digging, I increased bait sales by about 50pc but it still was not enough. People would only come in for bait really."
