Two councillors are battling to save their town’s loos after plans were announced to close the Stalham public conveniences.

Under North Norfolk District Council proposals the block, just off the High Street, will be permanently shut as the authority looks to save £46,000 a year by closing or partially closing 14 of its 36 toilets.

Stalham councillors Matthew Taylor and Kevin Bayes have launched a petition to keep their town's public toilets open.

The petition has reached nearly 400 signatures in total.

Mr Taylor said: “If these cuts go ahead, Stalham will be left as the only town in North Norfolk without a public toilet – in our view that simply is not good enough.

"We are launching this petition to show just how strong local opinion is about their plans – we need to ensure we keep this facility in the town.

"We will continue to fight to do what is right by our community – we need to see either a commitment to keep these toilets open, or a new replacement brought forward with significant pace.”

The petition details can be found online here: https://chng.it/PX8kWpCWZX or several locations around the town, with hard copies being provided.

Locations include: Forrests Newsagents, The Swan Inn, Cawdrons Butchers and Café Charlotte.
