A sea rescue survivor is swimming 20 miles to raise funds for the lifeboat service that saved him and his dog.

Curtis Johnson and Rex were picked up by Cromer RNLI after falling into a rough high tide.

Curtis said: "Due to the severity of the crashing waves of the North Sea and my inability to exit the water safely, HM Coastguards tasked the local volunteers at Cromer RNLI to come and rescue us.

"As a thank you I am going to be doing a 20 mile sponsored swim which equates to 1,287 lengths of the Kingfisher swimming pool in Sudbury over the next two weeks."

The fundraiser concludes with a visit to Cromer Lifeboat Station to personally present the donation.

Cromer RNLI Coxswain Paul Watling said: "We are so grateful to Curtis for sharing his story so we can highlight the importance of being safe by the sea."

RNLI lifeboats launched 1,041 times last year in the North and East region, saving 33 lives.

The charity's lifeguards launched 810 times, aiding 871 people and saved five lives.
