A tyre fitter has described the moment he rushed to help a pedestrian who was involved in a collision with a lorry in Norfolk today.
The incident happened at 10.30am on Tuesday (April 30) on the A148 Holt Bypass east of the north Norfolk town and left the male pedestrian in a critical condition.
Robert Cook, 50, who works as a tyre technician at Tyre Pros, in Station Road, opposite the scene of the incident, rushed over after hearing the lorry’s horn followed by the collision.
Mr Cook, an ex-solider, was the first on the scene before paramedics arrived minutes later.
The man who was hit by the lorry, believed to be in his sixties or seventies, was flown by the East Anglian Air Ambulance to Addenbrooke's Hospital in a critical condition.
Mr Cook, from Sheringham, said: “I heard the horn and saw him lying on the floor so I ran over.
“I was the first person over there and he had sustained a head injury.
“We had heard the horn of the lorry and the collision, but we thought it had hit another vehicle.
“I pulled his shirt out of his trousers to check his back but I couldn’t see anything other than the head injury.
“I stayed with him until the paramedics arrived.
“There was no response at first, but by the time I left his hands were wiggling, which was a good thing.
“The driver of the lorry was only a young lad.
“He was really upset and distressed.”

A paramedic first responder was the first to attend the scene before police, ambulance crews and an air ambulance arrived.
A section of the A148 was closed northbound between Hempstead Road and Station Road while investigations were carried out and the road was cleared.
The road reopened to traffic just before 2pm.
