B1110 in Thornage closed after crumbling house blocks road

A stretch of the B1110 through Thornage is closed after bricks and tiles fell from the front of a house yesterday afternoon, blocking the road. 

Emergency services were called to The Street just before 4pm on Wednesday (February 21), with police closing the road.

Sanders Coaches has diverted its routes around the road closure.

The road remains closed today.

The owner of the house was not in the property at the time it crumbled, but returned later that evening at around 8pm. 

The debris has now been cleared from the road and the owner said contractors removed any remaining loose bricks and tiles from the house earlier this morning.

Highways and North Norfolk District Council (NNDC) are expected to assess the road this afternoon.

The owner said he believes the damage was likely caused by recent storms, with "high winds and gusts yesterday morning" before the bricks and tiles fell.

One witness said: "My son and I were driving home and the middle part of the roof slipped and took the overhang of the porch with it.

"Bricks and debris fell into the road nearly missing the car in front.

"It happened so quickly - I'm just thankful it was between two cars."

Norfolk Police, Fire and Rescue Service, North Norfolk District Council and Highways have all attended.
