A "majestic" meteor shower will be visible over Norfolk this weekend. 

The Leonid meteor shower will light up the skies in the early hours of Saturday morning. 

The Leonids are usually one of the most active showers with fast, bright meteors.

Meteor showers occur when particles of comet debris enter our atmosphere and burn up, appearing as shooting stars.

This weekend there will be roughly 10 meteors per hour and these will have fine trains. 

They will be visible to the naked eye but those hoping to catch a glimpse will need to allow their eyes to adjust to the dark and be located away from street lights and other light pollution.

There is some rain forecast overnight in Norfolk which may make the phenomenon more difficult to observe.

The Leonid meteor shower is named after the constellation of Leo as this is where the shooting stars look as though they are coming from. 

For those who don't get a chance to spot them this weekend, the meteors will continue to be visible in the night sky at lower rates until November 30.
