The torrent of water unleashed by the collapse of the Nova Kakhovka dam in Ukraine has caused widespread flooding and devastation in the wartorn country.

But now a north Norfolk-led effort is under way to bring some relief to people in the country where Russia has been waging a war of aggression since February last year.

North Norfolk News:

Matthew Cole, from North Norfolk Aid for Ukraine, said 200 offshore lifejackets and 100 offshore immersion suits had been donated to the group by a company that works offshore, and they were now on their way to Eastern Europe.

Mr Cole said: "We had a phone call with our NGO partners in Berlin on Wednesday evening, and they said [the Ukrainians] are desperate for this kind of equipment for their rescue operations.

"The dam has been blown up and all hell has broken loose. We've managed to get them on an artic to Slough, and then they will be on their way."

Four boxes of paramedical equipment and a generator are also part of the delivery.

Mr Cole - 52 and from Aldborough - and the aid group have organised more than £500,000 in goods and equipment to be delivered to Ukraine since last year.

Next month they plan to send another major delivery, including hydraulically-powered jacks, cutters and splitters, as well as heavy-duty pads that can be used to rescue people from the rubble of collapsed buildings or to shift vehicles.

Mr Cole said they had been donated by a company in Mansfield in Nottinghamshire.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said up to 80 towns and villages had been flooded by the dam collapse, which Russia is thought to have caused.
