The site of a former grand hotel on Sheringham’s seafront is to be bought by North Norfolk District Council.
Councillors voted unanimously to carry out a compulsory purchase order on the now-demolished Shannocks hotel site at the top of the High Street, after years of inaction on the part of the developer, Huddies Ltd, which has permission to build shops and flats there.
The vote, at Tuesday’s full council meeting, was “to confirm the support for the serving of the general vesting document to take ownership of the site, and to approve an additional £10,000 to cover costs associated with the purchase of the property”.
The council’s chairman, Pauline Grove-Jones, said: “This has been blighting Sheringham for quite some time, we need to get it moved on.”
Under agreed terms, Huddies should have started construction on the new building by November 23 this year, with the project to have been finished by June 2023.
