A village deli is under new ownership - with plans for it to supply for weddings and events at one of north Norfolk's most historic venues.

Cley Windmill owners Natalie and Varian Bush have taken on Picnic Fayre in the High Street of the north Norfolk village.

Mrs and Mr Bush bought the business from John and Victoria Pryor in October, and now plan to use its supplies of wine, cheese, meat and other Norfolk produce to cater events at the windmill.

The husband-and-wife team previously bought their first home in nearby Holt, before starting a holiday let business.

They took over the windmill in 2021.

Mrs Bush said the store was a "great fit" for their business.

She said: "Picnic Fayre is a real hub for the village and with the potential synergy with the mill, we saw it as the perfect choice.

"We hope the shop will provide for the windmill including for its weddings, and therefore it seemed like a really good idea.

“To anyone who knows Picnic Fayre, they will fully appreciate John and Victoria have established such a gem, which we will endeavour to carry on as they’ve done."

The mill has been a bed and breakfast since the 1980s and has hosted weddings for more than 20 years.

Mr and Mrs Bush have overseen its refurbishment.

They started serving tea, coffee and cakes from a garden cafe in summer and opened up a bar.

Picnic Fayre is the first shop the couple has bought, and this is the first time it has changed hands since Mr and Mrs Pryor founded it in the mid-’80s.

Mrs Bush added: "It is so popular with locals and holidaymakers thanks to John and Victoria, meaning there is no need to make any major changes."

Matt and Ash, who managed the store under the Pryors, still run it day to day.

Mrs Bush is currently spending two days a week at the store, getting to know how it runs, as well as the customers who use it.

The Pryors are hoping that next year Picnic Fayre can supply almost everything for the garden cafe.
